Description

The item illustrations in the Five-Factor Nonverbal Personality Questionnaire (FF-NPQ) depict personality-relevant behaviors that are based on Murray's (1938) system of needs, the scales of the Personality Research Form (PRF), and the Five-Factor Model of personality.

This nonverbal measure asks respondents to rate the likelihood that they would engage in the type of behavior depicted in the item illustration on a 7-point Likert scale. Response options range from extremely likely to extremely unlikely.

The 60-item FF-NPQ takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It measures Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience--better known as the 'Big 5' factors of personality.

Reliability and Validity

Several studies have evaluated these nonverbal assessments in North American, European, Middle Eastern, and Asian countries and have demonstrated strong support for the reliability, validity, and general applicability of the assessment. The following are some sources of support for the psychometric properties of the FF-NPQ.

• The mean alpha coefficient for FF-NPQ was satisfactory for the Canadian sample (.80). Using the archival data, the FF-NPQ internal consistency reliability ranged from .64 to .77 across seven countries sampled.
• The mean convergent validity between the NEO-FFI and the FF-NPQ was .52. Across the seven countries sampled in the NPQ data, the mean convergent correlation between the FF-NPQ and PRF measures of 'Big 5' personality factors was .48.
• Both self-ratings for the NPQ and FF-NPQ showed satisfactory correlations with peer-rated verbal measures of personality (.40 for NPQ; .41 for FF-NPQ).

Materials required for hand scoring include a manual, one picture booklet, one hand scorable answer sheet and one profile sheet per respondent.
